Form 4. Grammar Box. Past Simple (wasn't / weren't, Was / Were)

For students of the fourth form.
Grammar Box 
           Past Simple: wasn't / weren't, Was /Were

            (negative sentences, questions)    
 We use was and were in negative sentences and questions.

     Negative 
Long form                Short form
I was not                   I wasn't
He / She / It was not                He / She / It wasn't
You / We / They were not               You / We / They weren't

wasn't at school yesterday.
wasn't well last week.
He / She wasn't at home yesterday evening.
It wasn't rainy yesterday.
We weren't at the circus last month.
You weren't at the seaside last summer.
They weren't at the library two days ago.

We use wasn't and weren't with There.

There wasn't  any  coffee in the cup.
There weren't lots of schools in the town.


Questions                   Short answers

             Was I ... ?                     Yes, you were.    /   No, you weren't.

 Was I at the circus last month?

Yes, you were.    /   No, you weren't.

    Was he ... ?                     Yes, he was.   /   No, he wasn't.
Was your brother at work two days ago? 

Yes, he was. / No, he wasn't.

          Was she ... ?                   Yes, she was.   /   No, she wasn't.

Was her mum at the supermarket last week? 

Yes, she  was. / No, she wasn't.

Was it ... ?                         Yes, it was.  /   No, it wasn't.
Was it  snowy yesterday evening?

Yes, it was.  /   No, it wasn't.
